Kimberly de Caires

PERCUSSION

Kimberly is a San Francisco native. Her first career had her travelling around the country as a photojournalist. She eventually landed in Chicago where she began her studies in Afro-Cuban percussion. She performed extensively in the Chicago area with a number of bands including: Joygirl (all-grrl rock), Maluko Samba, Butterfly McQueen, and Rebecca's Statue. Recently returning home to study Afro-Cuban folkloric traditions and further her percussion studies in general, she has spent most of her time doing just that. She has studied with Edgardo Cambon, and Carolyn Brandy, and is greatly inspired and influenced by her friend, Valerie Marranjo (Saturday Night Live percussionist). Kimberly has a deep respect for the depth of these traditions, but also enjoys pulling from multiple sources and combining influences to create music that grooves (pop, rock, funk, latin, R&B, world music, and various combinations).
